Structure and phase composition of synthetic zirconia corundum crystallized in roll crystallizers

The authors conduct a physicochemical analysis of the formation conditions of the phase composition, porosity, microstructure, and catalytic and sorptive behavior of synthetic zirconia corundum under conditions of roll crystallization from a melt. They find that the physical and mechanical properties are determined by macro- and microstructure parameters and by the phase composition of the zirconia which themselves depend on the method of melt preparation for crystallization--including protection against oxidation and degree of reduction--and on cooling conditions during crystal growth.
