This paper presents results of an ESR study of the reaction of monoand binuclear transition-metal carbonyls (MC) with 2-propanol, HMPTA, and DMF using the spin trap technique. 2-Methyl-2-nitrosopropane (MNP) and nitrosodurene (ND) were used as the spin traps. The ESR spectral and nitrosodurene (ND) were used as the spin traps. The ESR spectral parameters of the nitroxyl radicals formed in the photochemical decomposition of MC in 2-propanol are presented. It is shown that transition-metal carbonyls may participate in substitution reactions with breakage of a C-H bond. In contrast to mononuclear M(CO)/sub 6/ metal carbonyls (M = Cr, Mo, and W), Fe(CO)/sub 5/ reacts with 2-propanol, HMPTA, and DMF to form iron radical cations. Coinitiator molecules are inserted into the coordination sphere of the metal during the reactions studied.
