Effects of temperature and microstructure on the elastic properties of selected Eu/sub 2/O/sub 3/--HfO/sub 2/ compositions

Journal Article · · J. Am. Ceram. Soc.; (United States)
Europium sesquioxide is of interest as a control material for reactors because it has several large-cross-section isotopes which are formed successively on neutron capture. Elastic properties of Eu/sub 2/O/sub 3/ and selected Eu/sub 2/O/sub 3/-rich Eu/sub 2/O/sub 3/--HfO/sub 2/ compositions were investigated by the sonic technique from room temperature to 1500/sup 0/C. Sintered monoclinic Eu/sub 2/O/sub 3/ was found to have anomalously low room temperature moduli and to exhibit hystersis on thermal cycling. Fine-grained hot-pressed Eu/sub 2/O/sub 3/, as well as sintered specimens that contained at least 6 mol percent HfO/sub 2/, did not exhibit these anomalous characteristics.
