Data are presented on the radiation chemical reduction of NpO/sub 2//sup 2 +/ and PuO/sub 2//sup 2 +/ ions in solutions of HNO/sub 3/ under the action of ..gamma.. and ..cap alpha.. radiation. It was shown that the NpO/sub 2//sup 2 +/ ion in the region of (HNO/sub 3/) 10/sup -2/-10/sup -1/ M are reduced with yields of 5.0 and 6.0 ions/100 eV in ..gamma.. and ..cap alpha.. radiolysis. In the same region of (HNO/sub 3/), G(-PuO/sub 2//sup 2 +/) is significantly lower both in ..cap alpha.. and in ..gamma.. radiolysis. This is explained by the greater role of the reaction between the two radiolysis products H/sub 2/O/sub 2/ and HNO/sub 2/ in solutions of plutonium, which possesses rate constants of the reactions with H/sub 2/O/sub 2/ and HNO/sub 2/ lower than for NpO/sub 2//sup 2 +/ ions. It was shown that the rate of the reaction between H/sub 2/O/sub 2/ and HNO/sub 3/ depends on the dose rate (I), acidity, and (PuO/sub 2//sup 2 +/). With increasing I, the rate of the reaction between H/sub 2/O/sub 2/ and HNO/sub 3/ increases, while the yield of the reduction of PuO/sub 2//sup 2 +/ ions decreases. It was suggested that under equal conditions ((H/sup +/), (PuO/sub 2//sup 2 +/)), the reduction of /sup 238/Pu ions will occur with a lower yield than that of /sup 239/Pu.
