Drill steering apparatus

Patent ·
OSTI ID:7187384
A steering tool is described comprising a tubular body having means on each end for connecting into a drill string at a position close to the drill bit, an upper stabilizer on the tubular body having means coacting between the tubular body and the upper stabilizer to sense the low side of the well bore being drilled, a lower stabilizer on the tubular body having means coacting between the tubular body and the lower stabilizer to impart a lateral thrust to the tubular body responsive to the sensing of the the low side of the well bore by the upper stabilizer, means adjustably interconnecting the sensing means in the upper stabilizer to the thrust means in the lower stabilizer to provide thrust in a preselected direction to the lower end of the tubular body and means for securing each of the stabilizers to the tubular body for rotation therewith and allowing freedom of relative movement between the tubular body and the stabilizers in radial directions.
