In response to the operation of an internal combustion engine, an input signal pressure is developed which differs from the atmospheric pressure by more than a first predetermined amount when exhaust gas recirculation is desirable. A recirculation valve then opens to permit the recirculation of exhaust gases from the exhaust passage to the intake passage of the engine. In response to operation of the recirculation valve, an output signal pressure is developed which, when it differs from the atmospheric pressure by more than a second predetermined amount, indicates that the recirculation valve is stuck closed. The system also indicates when the recirculation valve is stuck open.
