This paper reports on the new ASHRAE Standard 62-989, Ventilation for Acceptable Indoor Air Quality, which provides two procedures to determine ventilation rates for buildings. The ventilation rate procedure specifies ventilation rates as a function of occupancy and building use. The indoor air quality (IAQ) procedure provides a methodology to measure and control deleterious substances below safe levels. The IAQ procedure is inherently a more rigorous strategy because it considers all contaminants. The IAQ procedure also offers the promise of lower required ventilation and energy use in clean buildings. One requirement for implementing the ASHRAE Standard 62-1989 ventilation rate procedure is to provide continuous measurement of the ventilation air flow rate so that is can be regulated to the specified rate. It is assumed that, if the air balancing contractor makes this adjustment during start-up, adequate flow regulation will be obtained in all modes of operation.
