This patent describes a process for hydrocarbon conversion if a hydrocarbon feedstock under conditions effective to cause hydrocracking of the feedstock and thereby to produce lower boiling hydrocarbons which comprises the hydrocarbon feedstock in the presence of hydrogen with a catalyst. The catalyst comprises: a zeolitic aluminosilicate which has an SiO{sub 2}/Al{sub 2}O{sub 3} molar ratio of at least 6. The aluminosilicate having been treated by thermal treatment at an effective temperature and for an effective time in the presence of steam, followed by ion-exchange with a solution containing ammonium ion; and an effective amount of a hydrogenation component. The catalyst possessing ion exchange sites which are essentially free of rare earth cations.
