This patent describes a fixed catalyst bed. It comprises: at least one layer of substantially spherical alumina-containing particles resistant to the detrimental effect of water during hydrotreating, and at least one layer of hydrotreating catalyst particles comprising a refractory inorganic carrier material and at least one hydrogenation promoter selected from the group consisting of transition metals belonging to the Groups IIIB, IVB, VB, VIB, VIIB, VIII, IB, and IIB of the Periodic Table and compounds of the transition metals.
