Hydrofining employing a support material for fixed beds

Patent ·
OSTI ID:5929088
A hydrotreating process, is described comprising the step of contacting a substantially liquid hydrocarbon-containing heavy oil feed stream, which also contains compounds of sulfur and metals, with a free hydrogen containing gas in the presence of a fixed catalyst bed comprising: at least one layer of substantially spherical alumina-containing particles, and at least one layer of hydrotreating catalyst particles comprising a refractory inorganic carrier material and at least one hydrogenation promotor selected from the group consisting of transition metals belonging to Groups IIIB, IVB, VB, V IB, VIIB, VIII, IB, and IIB of the Periodic Table and compounds of the transition metals, in the presence of water and under such hydrotreating conditions as to obtain at least one liquid hydrocarbon-containing product stream having lower concentrations of sulfur and metals than the hydrocarbon-containing heavy oil feed stream.
