Definitions are given for peat, coal, and graphocite which establish the limits for members of a natural series of carbonaceous sediments derived from plants. Coal is classified on the basis of origin, composition, and certain readily observed features into two major classes, banded coal and nonbanded coal. Each of these classes and the lithologic components, vitrain, fusain, and attrital coal, found in different classes are defined. Definitions are provided for the following maceral series term, and where appropriate, the associated maceral group term: vitrinite, zylinoid, vitrinoid, anthrinoid, exinite, resinite, fusinite, fusinoid, semifusinite, and micrinite.
