Terms used to describe, mainly from megascopic observation, coal beds in the field, in hand specimens, and core or column samples are defined. Additional terms used in the microscopic analysis of coal by reflected light techniques are defined. The defined terms are attrital coal, banded coal, boghead coal, bone coal, lithotype, mineral parting, mineralized coal, nonbanded coal, vitrain, alginite, cutinite, exinite, dusinite, inertinite, maceral, macrinite, micrinite, resinite, sclerotinite, semifusinite, sporinite, and vitrinite.
