Inclusive measurements are presented for the differential cross sections and tensor analyzing powers ([sup [ital T]T][sub 20] and [ital T][sub 20]) of ions produced by the fragmentation of a beam of polarized [sup 23]Na incident on a [sup 208]Pb target at an energy of 195.5 MeV (8.5 MeV/nucleon). The data are discussed in terms of a simple shape-effect'' model, and compared to the predictions of the nuclear random-walk model which has been extended to the calculation of aligned, deformed projectiles. This model reproduces the principal features of the differential cross sections and the trends as a function of mass loss, but gives poorer agreement for the analyzing powers.
