Tentative methods for analysis for fluoride content of the atmosphere and plant tissues (manual procedures)
Procedures are outlined for the isolation and determination of fluoride in a wide range of sample types. Methods are described for both particulate and gaseous fluorides. After collection of fluorides as described in tentative ASTM methods D3266, D3267, and D3268 by use of a wet collector, or by ashing, three methods are described for fluoride isolation. These three methods are Willard-Winter distillation, ion-exchange, and diffusion in a sealed container. The isolated fluoride is determined by titrimetric, spectrophotometric, or potentiometric methods. Titration with a standard Th(NO/sub 3/)/sub 4/ solution to the formation of the pink thorium-alizarin lake is described. Spectrophotometric methods for fluoride determination that are described are determined by bleaching of the metal-dye complex of zirconium-Eriochrome cyanine T and zirconium-SPADNS or by increase in absorbance of the lanthanum-alizarin complexone.
