Overall normalization of the astrophysical [ital S] factor and the nuclear vertex constant for [sup 7]Be([ital p],[gamma])[sup 8]B reactions

We point out a simple relation between the nuclear vertex constant (NVC) and the overall normalization of the astrophysical [ital S] factor. Using predicted values of the NVC for the virtual decay of [sup 8]B [r arrow][sup 7]Be+[ital p], we find [ital S][sub 17](0) [approx]17.6 eV [ital b] for [sup 7]Be ([ital p],[gamma])[sup 8]B reactions, consistent with the low values extrapolated from direct capture measurements by Filippone [ital et] [ital al]. and by Vaughn [ital et] [ital al]. New possibilities, using proton transfer reactions, to measure the astrophysical [ital S] factor indirectly are proposed.
