The Coulomb dissociation of {sup 8}B and the {sup 7}Be(p,{gamma}){sup 8}B reaction at low energies

The cross section of the Coulomb dissociation (Primakoff) process of {sup 8}B - the {sup 208}Pb({sup 8}B,{sup 7}Bep){sup 208}Pb reaction , was measured using a 46.5 MeV/u {sup 8}B beam from the Riken-RIPS Radioactive Beam Facility, and the {sup 7}Be(p,{gamma}){sup 8}B capture reaction cross section was deduced at low energies; E{sub cm} = 0.6-1.7 MeV. The extracted astrophysical S{sub 17} factors were found to be consistent with the values measured by Vaughn et al. and Filippone et al. This result demonstrates the usefulness of the Coulomb dissociation method and suggests further experimental studies extended to lower relative energies for a new accurate determination of the S{sub 17} value relevant to the high energy solar neutrino flux.
