A new homologous series Sr sub n minus 1 Cu sub n+1 O sub 2n found in the SrO-CuO system treated under high pressure

Journal Article · · Journal of Solid State Chemistry; (United States)

A new homologous series of high-pressure phases, Sr{sub n{minus}1} Cu{sub n+1} O{sub 2n} (n = 3, 5, . . . ), were found in the SrO-CuO system treated at 6 GPa and 1373-1573 K. These crystallize in orthorhombic structures of space group Cmmm with unit-cell parameters of a {approximately} 3.9 {angstrom}, b {approximately} n x a, and c {approximately} 3.5 {angstrom}. Along the c-axis Cu{sub 1+1/n}O{sub 2} sheets alternate with Sr{sub 1{minus}1/n} sheets without oxygen. Within the Cu-O sheets, Cu-O double chains is b/2. The serial chemical composition and structure are interpreted as resulting from a shear operation upon the high-pressure form of SrCuO{sub 2} (n = {infinity}).
