This paper presents the US Department of Energy (DOE) Environmental Measurements Laboratory's (EML's) major contributions and collaborative studies in the field of Bonner sphere neutron spectrometry. This technique involves exposing a detector to a neutron radiation field and taking successive counts with thicker and thicker moderators surrounding the central neutron capture detector. The resulting data are then unfolded and interpreted using Bonner sphere unfolding codes. The primary EML Bonner sphere spectrometer system consists of 12 moderated polyethylene spheres of various sizes equipped with BF{sub 3} or {sup 3}He proportional counters. The spectrometer response functions were calculated at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). The various calculated detector response functions differ by only a few percent for the entire energy region. The Bonner sphere spectrometer is calibrated using {sup 252}Cf fission neutron sources.
