Model for asymptotic [ital D]-state parameters of light nuclei: Application to [sup 4]He

A simple method for calculating the asymptotic [ital D]-state observables for light nuclei is suggested. The method exploits the dominant clusters of the light nuclei. The method is applied to calculate the [sup 4]He asymptotic [ital D] to [ital S] normalization ratio [rho][sup [alpha]] and the closely related [ital D]-state parameter [ital D][sub 2][sup [alpha]]. The study predicts a correlation between [ital D][sub 2][sup [alpha]] and [ital B][sub [alpha]], and between [rho][sup [alpha]] and [ital B][sub [alpha]], where [ital B][sub [alpha]] is the binding energy of [sup 4]He. The present study yields [rho][sup [alpha]][congruent][minus]0.14 and [ital D][sub 2][sup [alpha]][congruent][minus]0.12 fm[sup 2] consistent with the correct experimental [eta][sup [ital d]] and the binding energies of the deuteron, triton, and the [alpha] particle, where [eta][sup [ital d]] is the deuteron [ital D]-state to [ital S]-state normalization ratio.
