Distribution function of type AA geomagnetic pulsations. [Auroral agitation]

Geomagnetic pulsations of the auroral agitation (AA) type are observed in a range of periods T approximately 3-20 sec and usually belong to the class of irregular Pi1 pulsations. The method used to study these pulsations is as follows. If there is a self-oscillating system, oscillations with a Gaussian distribution function of the amplitude envelope will be observed at the output when random fluctuations are superposed. If, however, there is a narrow-band filter, a Rayleigh amplitude distribution will be observed at the output when noise is superposed. Thus, to judge to which type the source of AA fluctuations is closer, the amplitude distribution is studied.
