Columbia LNG Corp., a subsidiary of the Columbia Gas System, Wilmington, Del., is nearing completion of a 1-billion-cfd base-load LNG receiving and regasification terminal at Cove Point, Md. Initially, the terminal will handle 650 MMscfd of gas with Columbia receiving 300 MMscfd and the remainder (350 MMscfd) going to Consolidated Natural Gas System, co-owner of the terminal. Importation of the Algerian LNG will ease future shortages. The tankers are berthed and unloaded about one mile offshore, and the liquid being unloaded is moved at about 50,000 gpm from the tanker through more than 2 miles of 32-in. stainless steel pipe into the tanks at Cove Point. The regasification processes and the facilities are described. Development of the 87-mile, 36-in., 1250-psig pipeline delivering the regasified LNG to a point west of Dulles Airport is described.
