Method of and apparatus for the low-temperature liquefied gas

Patent ·
OSTI ID:7149328
Linde AG designed an improved storage system for LNG tankers which incorporates a cooling system effective at the upper portion of the vessel to minimize the warming effect in the insulated area and the evaporation losses sustained in filling operations. The system consists of a thermally insulated storage compartment containing a number of LNG storage vessels connected with dip-tubes to horizontal auxilliary receptacles. The cooling system may be a conventional cooling circuit featuring a coolant in heat exchange with the upper portion of the upright storage vessels or a cooled liquid which is evaporated in heat exchange with these upper sections. Further cooling can be achieved by connecting the intermediate regions of the prone auxiliary receptacles to the lower part of the upright vessels. This arrangement allows all the prone or auxiliary cooling vessels to receive LNG during filling and emptying operations and enables portions of low-boiling LNG to be returned to storage as a residue to ease cooling during the return trip.
