SiC matrix composites reinforced with internally-synthesized TiB2

Conference · · Ceramic Engineering and Science Proceedings; (USA)
OSTI ID:7144472
A new process of preparing silicon carbide matrix composites by the internal synthesis of reinforcing particulate has been developed. SiC powder mixed with titanium-containing material and boron-containing material was hot-pressed at 2150 C in an argon atmosphere. The boron molar content in the mixture was designed to be more than twice that of Ti. In the process of hot pressing, the titanium-containing material and boron-containing material reacted to form TiB2. The synthesis of TiB2 was followed by the densification of SiC matrix with the aid of the excess boron-containing materials. 11 refs.
