The effect of forming processes on the sintering behavior of Si3N4/TiB2 composites

Titanium diboride particulate reinforced Si3N4 samples were formed by slip casting and isostatic pressing with the goal of optimizing the densification and component homogeneity. Isostatic pressing was found to be the better forming process yielding samples with densities of greater than 95 percent for up to 10 percent of TiB2 addition. The sintered densities of the samples were found to drop off sharply as a function of the percentage of TiB2. 14 refs.
