On the basis of experimental data and a comparison of them with calculations it is found to appear probable that the energy spectrum of primary cosmic rays has an exponent ..gamma.. = 1.65 up to energies E/sub 0/ = 5(10)/sup 13/ eV/nucleon and ..gamma.. = 2.1 to 2.2 up to E/sub 0/ = 10/sup 17/ eV/nucleon. The possibility that the chemical composition of the primary cosmic rays changes in accordance with the change in the primary spectrum is noted. (JFP)
