Nucleon charge exchange and (. pi. ,. pi. N) reactions

Experimental data and theoretical estimates of (..pi..,..pi..N) cross sections are discussed. It is found that the ..pi../sup -/ to ..pi../sup +/ ratios in experiments where the residual A-1 nucleus is observed are strongly dependent on the probabilities for charge exchange of the recoil nucleon. These ratios are sometimes dramatically influenced by nuclear structure effects.
