X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic (XPS) study of unsupported cobalt-molybdenum sulfide catalysts

XPS spectra were obtained for nine fully sulfided used cobalt/molybdenum catalysts with 0-100Vertical Bar3< cobalt content, and the spectral information correlated with composition, surface area, and activity for the isomerization of cyclohexane, hydrogenation of cyclohexene, and hydrogenolysis of thiophene. The results suggest that the hydrodesulfurization and isomerization maximum in the synergistic range of composition (15-50Vertical Bar3< cobalt) is due to a combination of higher activity per surface area and a high surface area; and that the active sites involve a molybdenum species with a charge between tri- and tetravalent molybdenum.
