X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy study of cobalt-molybdenum binary oxide catalysts

Journal Article · · J. Catal.; (United States)

Cobalt-molybdenum catalysts prepared from their mixed salt solutions and calcined at 550 showed surface enrichment of cobalt at Co 6 and surface enrichment of molybdenum for higher cobalt contents. Catalysts prepared by mixing, and calcining at 550/sup 0/C, the dry oxide powders showed no differences between bulk and surface composition. Further studies with a catalyst prepared by the dry mixing method and containing 30Vertical Bar3< cobalt showed that treating the calcined catalyst with 10 mm Hg thiophene/hydrogen or pure hydrogen at 400/sup 0/C enriched the surface with molybdenum which was in the form of molybdenum disulfide (MoS/sub 2/) after the thiophene treatment. Treatment with hydrogen sulfide/hydrogen under the same conditions enriched the surface with cobalt as CoS and/or Co/sub 9/S/sub 8/. Zinc-molybdenum catalysts behaved similarly.
