Liquid Metal Fast Breeder Reactor conceptual design study: Phase 1, Reactor layout recommendation

Technical Report ·
DOI:https://doi.org/10.2172/713495· OSTI ID:713495
Recommended configurations and design features for the CDS loop and pool plant reactors are described, and the bases for their selection are discussed. The loop reactor design features a vessel size (37.5 ft dia) that is shop fabricable, yet large enough to provide "pool-type" features such as: high thermal inertia, in-vessel decay heat removal, and through-the-deck fuel transfer. High entry in-vessel downcomer piping and pool-type core shielding are key elements of the compact loop plant design. The pool reactor design features a compact configuration (64-ft dia vessel) made possible by a uniquely small diameter rotatable plug design and the application of a 4 IHX/4 pump primary heat transfer circuit. This document satisfies Milestone 3.2-F of the Conceptual Design Study, Phase I Work Plan, N323WPL000002.
