Peaceful nuclear explosions

Twenty years of U.S. programs, notably Project Plowshare, for evaluating the technical and economic feasibility of using nuclear explosions for peaceful purposes are reviewed. Information is included on specific uses, experimental results, seismic and radiation hazards, economics, foreign interest in peaceful nuclear explosions, and international agreements on nuclear explosives. It is concluded that despite much U.S. effort the utility of peaceful nuclear explosions has not yet been demonstrated, and that continued development is hindering efforts to secure a comprehensive ban on nuclear weapons testing.
