An introduction to manual methods for estimating air quality is presented. Topics covered include: meteorological considerations, source factors, averaging times, units for air quality estimates, statistical models such as the Proportional model and Larsen's model, and diffusion models based on Gaussian plume assumptions. Examples of the Proportional model are illustrated in relation to the California State Implementation Plan. Air pollutants considered include: photochemical oxidants, carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, particulate matter, sulfur oxides, and nitrogen oxides.
