Topics discussed in this symposium on lithium batteries include the solid-cathode and liquid-cathode primary systems as well as the organic-electrolyte, inorganic-electrolyte, and polymer-electrolyte rechargeable systems. Papers are presented on manganese dioxide-lithium cells, lithium-anode cells with flowing oxyhalide electrolytes, lithium electrodes used in organic solvent-based electrolyte secondary batteries, a solvated electron lithium electrode for secondary batteries, the electrochemical studies of the ternary Li-Si-S system, and a new positive electrode material based on Li4Mo5O12. Attention is also given to inorganic electrolyte battery systems with solid positive electrodes, performance optimization in lithium/sulfur dioxide rechargeable cells, plasticizer salts for polymer electrolyte, the effect of side-chain length and cross-linking on ionic conductivity in polyphosphazene solid electrolytes, and a polymeric electrolyte rechargeable lithium battery.
