This paper presents a correlation between the chemical composition, specific oxygen chemisorption, and catalytic activity with respect to the oxidation of ethanol for the catalyst melts (CM) KV03-V/sub 2/O/sub 5/ (A), KVO/sub 3/-V/sub 2/ /SUP O/ /sub 5/-MoO/sub 3/ (B), and KVO/sub 3/-V/sub 2/O/sub 5/-M /SUB x/ O /SUB y/ (C) at 673-873 K. The causes of the correlation are discussed on the basis of similarities in the structure of solid and liquid oxide composites containing V/sub 2/O/sub 5/. It is suggested that the oxidative activity of the CM of system A is determined by the presence of the bronze KV/sub 4/O (10.5-x), that of the CM of system B by bronzes of the type 3K/sub 2/O.5V20(5-x).Y MoO/sub 3/ (where y = 1, 2, 4). Oxides modify the CM mainly by changing the bonding energy of oxygen chemisorbed by the catalyst. The effect of a transit across the melting point on the catalytic activity of the CM was studied.
