Positioned between the permafrost and casing, Arctic well cements must hydrate and set at subfreezing temperatures and not degrade as a result of freeze-thaw cycling during the lifetime of the well. Additionally, these cements must gain sufficient strength to support the compressive and tensile loads generated by thaw subsidence and freezeback. Gypsum-portland blends and high-alumina cements are suitable for Arctic use if implaced by the special field procedures developed by North American operators for completing Arctic wells.
