The impacts of extensive research and development programs on coal slurry pipelines are discussed by witnesses from various sectors. The need for research and development on coal pipeline transportation and ERDA's role in this research and development are summarized by Dr. Phillip C. White, Assistant Administrator for Fossil Energy, ERDA. Testimony supporting the need for slurry pipelines as a transportation mechanism is presented by Jack O. Horton, Assistant Secretary for Land and Water Resources, Department of the Interior. The impacts of long-distance coal pipelines on a nationwide basis with respect to energy logistics of coal, transport options, economic impacts, and research and development needs are presented by Dr. Shoa Lee Soo, Professor of Mechanical Engineering, University of Illinois. The advantages of using methacoal technology rather than slurries are extolled by Leonard J. Keller, President of Keller Corp., Edward J. Wasp, Vice President of Energy Transportation Systems and Robert P. McNeil, Assistant to the President, Slurry Transport Associates, discussed the technology of and plans for building a slurry pipeline from Wyoming to Arkansas.
