Atom per cent fission in uranium and plutonium fuel (mass spectrometric method) - 1973

Book ·
OSTI ID:7125058

A computerized mass spectrometric method is described for the determination of the heavy element atom per cent fission in irradiated uranium fuel with an initial plutonium content of 0 to 50% from the isotopic analysis of the fuel before and after irradiation. The analysis must be carried out under conditions as nearly identical as possible, and the sample before irradiation must be representative of the fuel. Atomic ratios of the isotopes /sup 235/U, /sup 236/U, /sup 239/Pu, /sup 240/Pu, /sup 241/Pu, and /sup 242/Pu to /sup 238/U are measured mass spectrometrically. The atom per cent fission attributed to fission of /sup 235/U, /sup 239/Pu, and /sup 241/Pu is separately calculated and summed to obtain the total heavy element atom per cent fission.
