Education in environmental remote sensing: potentials and problems

Journal Article · · Environ. Prof.; (United States)
OSTI ID:7121890
Environmental remote sensing uses airborne and space imaging systems to inventory and monitor earth resources. This technology affords a global environmental perspective, yet our ability to acquire remote sensing data far exceeds our ability to use remote-sensing methodologies for the solution of environmental problems. The increased application of remote sensing will be premised not only on enhanced interdisciplinary educational opportunities in the field, but also on the development of a substantive commitment and policy on the conduct of the civil space remote sensing program. This article includes an introduction to remote-sensing principles and applications, a characterization of the status and needs of remote sensing education in the US, and a summary of the fundamental policy issues that will determine remote sensing's future role in environmental and resource management. 7 figures.
