Survey of closed-cycle helium-temperature refrigerators. [Survey of closed-cycle helium-temperature refrigerators for superconducting delay lines]
A superconducting delay line which must be operated at a temperature of 4.2 K is being developed. Available closed-cycle refrigeration systems which can supply sufficient refrigeration to cool the delay line and in which the delay line can be installed with minimum refrigerator modification are reviewed. At present, the heat leak to the delay lines does not exceed 50 mW and therefore, taking a factor of four for the margin of safety, a minimum cooling capacity of 200 mW is required. This provides for a faster cool-down time and allows for future modifications (such as an increased number of taps) which might increase the heat leak to the line. As for the physical requirement, a cylindrical space of 3-in. diameter and 4-in. length will be adequate. It was found that three manufacturers are presently producing systems capable of achieving the desired temperature and of supplying the necessary cooling. All of these appear readily adaptable to the cooling of the Martin superconducting delay line.
