Pipelines are the most efficient, cost-effective means of transporting energy---until a leak occurs. One leak, depending on its size, can render a pipeline useless. Several such leaks in succession make operators begin to consider replacing the entire pipeline, particularly if the leaks are caused by external corrosion. In most cases, the amount of metal lost and the surface area affected are a very small percentage of the total pipeline. Total replacement is therefore not warranted, if the weak- steel areas can be identified and repaired. This paper reports that replacement is required if the pipeline is riddled with stress corrosion cracks. While conditions can be modified to stop the cracks from growing, no method exists to repair stress cracks. It is best to replace SCC-affected pipe rather than experience the massive failures that can occur.
