Not yet on the shelf, Caterpillar Tractor Co.'s new 5650 gas-turbine generator set is flat-rated 3000 hp at 100/sup 0/F and nominally rated 2135 kW ISO baseload with a 7060 Btu/hp-hr heat rate. The twin-shaft turbine with integral recuperator has a nearly constant 0.385 lb/hp-hr specific fuel consumption down to about 60% rated power. Two 5650 units, installed as cogeneration sets in Caterpillar plants, will provide in-house baseload power heating, and air conditioning at a 62% overall thermal efficiency. Four other units are being field-tested on a limited-lease basis.

A 50-Hz compressed air storage peaking plant is being operated at Huntorf, Germany proving the feasibility of the concept as a good commercial alternative for areas where hydro pumped storage is either impossible or impractical and paving the way for 60-Hz plant modules worldwide. The 290-MW installation is being run approximately 2 hr per day during the winter peaking season with a net heat rate of 5300 Btu per kW-hr.

Stanford Research Institute recently completed a study which demonstrated that it is technically and economically feasible with current technology to gasify high-sulfur coal or oil for combined-cycle generating plants.
