The variation of G(e/sub aq/sup -//) with beam penetration depth, and hence, with LET, has been measured in water using 10-..mu..sec pulses of 20-MeV deuterons and 40-MeV ..cap alpha.. particles. Similarly, G (benzophenone/sup -/) has been determined in water containing 0.1 M t-butanol, 10/sup -4/ M benzophenone, and 10/sup -3/ M NaOH. For deuterons and ..cap alpha.. particles with LETs of about 200 MeV/cm, the G values are about 25 percent higher for the ..cap alpha.. particles. This effect is in agreement with a more diffuse nature of the ..cap alpha.. particle track indicated by previous experimental and theoretical studies.
