Glen Gery Corp., Reading, Pa., has initiated an energy-independence program of coal gasification to provide an uninterrupted supply of basic fuel for the company's face brick plants in Pennsylvania. Glen Gery now substitutes gas made from locally mined low-sulfur anthracite for natural gas as primary fuel for its brick kilns. By the end of the year all Pennsylvania plants run by the company will be using substantially less natural gas and practically no fuel oil. Glen Gery has contracted for a guaranteed 15-year supply of anthracite from a recently formed joint-venture company, Tuscarora Coal Corp., which is now completing a $2-million cleaning plant in Schuylkill County, close to all Glen Gery brick plants. The joint venture is owned 55% by Glen Gery and 45% by Gale Coal Co., Port Carbon, Pa., which will supply coal from its mines to the Tuscarora preparation plant. The gas producers are Wellman-Galusha systems, made by McDowell-Wellman Engineering Co., Cleveland, and used by Glen Gery since the 1950s. By the end of this year the company will have seven gasifiers on line at six plants providing 90% of the fuel required for brick firing. The early producers were mothballed when natural gas became plentiful, but now the situation has reversed. The new preparation plant, first big such facility to be built in the anthracite region in recent years, will supply approximately 80,000 tpy to Glen Gery, and the remainder will be open-marketed.
