Visits were made to the Glen-Gery Corporation facilities in Reading and York, Pennsylvania to discuss anthracite coal gasification projects. Each gasifier was used to fire a single continuous brick kiln. The company had four operating producers, and three more under construction. The gasifier at the Reading facility showed few, if any, leaks in the unit. The poke hole dogs were all tight with no leakage around them. Carbon-monoxide (630080) monitoring indicated that carbon-monoxide concentration on the operator's deck was less than 50 parts per million (ppm) at all times. However, the gas was concentrated to about 500ppm on the upper deck where the coal feed bin was located. The York facility used a 50/50 buckwheat/rice Tuscarora anthracite. Carbon-monoxide levels of up to 500ppm were measured at the coal feed bin level. Redesign of the gasifier housing and installation of exhaust fans resulted in carbon-monoxide levels below the measurement capacity of the carbon-monoxide monitors. A detailed description of the operation of a low Btu gasifier was provided, including anthracite coal, cold start/up, hot start/up, operation, maintenance, and exposure.
