Measurement and analysis of positive sigma hyperons produced from low energy k-p interactions

The author has measured the backward differential cross section for ..sigma../sup +/..pi../sup -/ at five incident kaon momenta in the range 642 to 744 MeV/c. The measurements are concentrated in the kinematic region corresponding to cos(theta/sub K..pi..//sup */) < -0.95. These data points together with other recently published measurements have been added to the existing set of cross section data to make a new partial wave analysis of both the ..sigma pi.. and antiKN channels. In particular, the properties of the P/sub 11/..sigma..(1660) resonance have been studied to better determine the status of this state.
