  1. Heery Program Management, Inc. Broward County, FL (US)
Built in 1972, the North Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant (Broward County, Fla.) had an original capacity of 60 million gallons per day (mgd). Expansion plans called for an increase to an 80-mgd capacity. This paper reports that Broward County's solution to its expansion needs was the use of injection deep wells, a benign and cost-effect system of dispersing treated secondary effluent downward rather than outward. Use of injection wells to dispose wastewater is relatively uncommon but not entirely new. Broward County's deep sell injection project was funded by general revenue bonds, and construction was begun after extensive public hearings and numerous permit approvals from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Florida Department of Environmental Regulation.
