Palladium was deposited on chopped nylon 66, nylon 6, nylon 11, and Nylon-Nomex fibers from aqueous chloropalladous acid solutions of different concentrations, either at room or at refluxing temperature. The highest activity for octyne hydrogenation at 50/sup 0/ or 70/sup 0/C in n-propanol or n-heptane was observed on catalysts prepared from a 0.003 g/100 cc platinum solution, and the highest selectivity for olefin production occurred with catalysts prepared from solutions of lower palladium concentration. The activity was not poisoned by thiophene. The hydrogenation activity of Pd/nylon for isoprene, 1,3-pentadiene, 1-pentyne, and 1-octyane varied greatly with various solvents and was generally highest with n-propanol and acetic acid. The selectivity for various products varied with solvent in a manner distinctly different from conventional palladium catalysts. Electron probe microanalysis revealed palladium on the exterior surface and in the interior of the fiber, probably as a polyamide-palladium-chlorine complex containing palladium(II) in a square coplanar arrangement of ligands. Possible reaction mechanisms that account for the product distributions are discussd.
