This paper studies the hydrogenation of phenylacetylene, 1,3-pentadiene, and 1-hexene on palladium catalysts in the presence of various sulfurcontaining compounds. It has been found that catalytic sites which have been poisoned by reactions with sulfur compounds can be reactivated during the hydrogenation process by unsaturated compounds. A mechanism has been proposed to account for this effect; it involves reaction of the highly active (with respect to palladium) sulfur compounds with an unsaturated hydrocarbon and hydrogen to give isostructural sulfides which are inert and do not poison the palladium catalyst.
