Cobalt and nickel supported on ..gamma..-Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ display high catalytic activity and 100% selectivity in the vapor phase hydrogenation of acetone to isopropanol at 333-363 degrees K. Iron is inactive under these conditions. On the basis of rate measurements, adsorption data, and IR spectroscopy, a mechanism is developed in which the ratedetermining step is the reaction of the acetone adsorbed on metal with atomic hydrogen. The thermodynamic properties of the adsorbed acetone are found and it is hypothesized that the low activity of iron is caused by the stable bonding of this metal with the ketone.
