A modified Cd--He laser emits simultaneously at five wavelengths in the green, red, and blue. This can simplify multicolor recording and color holography systems that now require an awkward and expensive setup with two or more cw monochromatic lasers emitting each at its own wavelength. A cataphoretic process in the metal-vapor discharge sweeping Cd ions toward the cathode is a major factor in Cd--He laser tube design. Mirror reflectivity can be altered to select wavelength. Emission occurs from the negative-glow region of the cathode and the hollow cathode doubles as a discharge bore around which Cd vapor can diffuse back to the anode region. The relative outputs at the several emission wavelengths can be adjusted for improved fits to the ICI chromaticity diagram, enabling more accurate reproduction of colors.
