IR Spectroscopic detection of reversible chemical modification of surface during gas-phase chain processes

By means of IR spectroscopy combined with kinetic methods, it has been shown that during the course of gas-phase chain processes, and under the influence of these processes, a surface in contact with the reacting gas undergoes a reversible chemical modification. The surface atom groups that are formed during the course of the chain reaction have been identified. It has been shown directly that these surface groups, in turn, largely determine the relationships in the gas-phase process as a whole, including hysteresis phenomena and the surface ''memory'' effect.
